Thumbnail design: what makes a thumbnail get clicked
Click-through rate is the ticket
Before the algorithm recommends your video, it has to be clicked. A thumbnail gets less than a second for that, often on a phone at 160 pixels wide. One subject, a face with emotion, at most three words and contrast against YouTube white: that is the baseline every design is measured against.
Test instead of guess
YouTube allows A/B tests with up to three thumbnails. Level 2 and 3 therefore deliver variants with a different subject or text so you can measure click-through rate instead of estimating it. The result feeds into the next designs.
